Hey Ric:
I finally completed the introduction to diving class at Lynnhaven Dive in Virginia Beach. It was a terriffic introduction that actually had us suited up and diving in a matter minutes. Can't wait to take the three day course in April. I LOVED IT!

Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. My dad has a place in Sunny Isles (174th & Collins), I've been going back and forth since 1978. I keep a couple sets of gear there. I'll let you know when I'm on my way down.

Seasons Greetings! Per your suggestion, I am looking into SCUBA now. I'm hoping to take an introductory course shortly after Christmas. Forever in search of a challenge.

Sorry I haven't returned your message until now. We have a 15 month old baby and it seems the days just merge and I get to have about three minutes on the internet.
Your credits are great and I just recieved an email from Dr. Vincent DeForest recommending NABS regarding the Ghana potential, which I hope you have read here on DIA.
My friend Gene Tinnie is in on this and definately is active in the South Florida area with similar projects so I assume you know him.
The non-profit in South Florida sounds good and Gene has a great programme with the replication of the Dos Amigos Slave Ship/Deare Rosamund Slave Ship Chaser. It is one of the projects we hope to become more involved with when our little group is up and running. We have a lot of good people in this Caribbean Maritime Heritage research centre project but lack the one constant, a leader with time, to initiate something as broad ranging and great in potential as this. If you wish more information on the Centre and a list of those wanting to assist, please send me a personal email to herossea2004@yahoo.com

Ric, just wanted to forward you a copy of the letter announcing the Annual NABS Youth Educational Summit 2009. Please pass the information to others you feel are interested and give me or Ken any comments you have. Thanks, Jimi

Greeting Fellow Divers and Youth Project Managers,

The National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS) has traditionally sponsored a Youth Program on a biannual basis to educate young people on the science of the Aquatic Environment
and the sport of Scuba Diving. There has been a total of 5 youth summits hosted by NABS. In the past, NABS hosted a Youth Summit in Key Largo, Florida that had more than 60 youths participating. During this three day event there were a number of workshops conducted by professionals and educators from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Florida Atlantic University. More than 30 young people were trained in the basics of underwater exploration with open water diver certifications done by volunteer dive instructors (members of NABS).

This letter is to announce the NABS Youth Educational Summit 2009, for ages 10 years old thru 18 years old, to be conducted at Savannah State University, June 21-27 2009. We have a NABS Committee working to make this the best summit ever. Ken Stewart is the Chairman of the committee. We are planning to have 40 youth participants for 2009. We are now trying to identify organizations that may be interested in sponsoring one or more youths to attend the 2009 youth summit. It is very important to have youths attend from each region. We have never had youths from the west to attend this summit and only 1 youth from the midwest during the past 5 summits.

This is a valuable learning experience for any youth and we need your help to make the NABS Youth Educational Summit 2009 a success. The selected youth need not be an open water scuba diver but must have an aquatic skill, i.e., swimming, diving, snorkeling, etc. In other words the youth must be comfortable in water. We are asking that each NABS club sponsor at least one youth to attend the 2009 youth summit.

For more information please contact Ken Stewart or any of the NABS Youth Committee members listed below.

LOL!!!! I was wondering if you know former frogman Michael Bond? I've been in touch with him in efforts to find some retired African American seal types to meet with the kids in the RAPS program founded by Leslie Paul. Do you know of any in the Va Beach area?
