I travel from small islands in the south Pacific to Africa and open water is where I believe the need for safety is most needed for most people around the world. It remains a fact that more people drown in the open water than in swimming pools for individuals over the age of 15, no matter what country we are talking about. I understand why every swimming organization focuses on pool swimming and the unfortunate drowning deaths in pools which must be prevented, but open water is where my focus is.

Your absolutely right a lot of folks; Black, White, Asian, Latino/a won't consider open water swimming because of the issues you just mentioned, but I can't begin to describe the joy I get when I'm out there accomplishing a long swim and the sense of freedom I feel in that environment.

Hopefully - one day - you do me the honor of coming to San Francisco and swimming with me in a controlled, safe, and fun environment that will introduce you to open water. Feel free to let me know when your in the area and you can stay at my house as my guest and partake of the fun you can have in my very large swimming pool :) Stay strong Darrick and keep swimming! My own children don't always understand my passion for swimming, but they just had to shut up and learn. Now I have to work on my younger children. Maybe one of them will get the bug. As it happens, I am currently writing, producing and directing a water safety awareness video for the Virginia Department of Health, Norfolk District. This is how I was made the acquaintance of Shaun and was invited to join the site. I'm afraid that I am not the best swimmer, but I certainly do love the water and see this as an opportunity to further hone my minimal water skills. I see it as very possible that I can provide some assistance in developing a video project for Diversity in Aquatics and would love to have further discussions along those lines.
