On Swimming, Dancing, and More Obscure Aquatic Sports

Before I flesh out some of my half formed thoughts about swimming an choreography, I wanted to mention two other more obscure aquatic sports that came to mind since the last post.

Synchronized swimming and water polo. (I won’t even go there with crew and other sports involving boats–at least not now).

Now, about dance…

I have noticed in this week of watching swim lessons a few similarities between swimming and dancing. There is something so exhilarating about watching a new swimmer. Like a baby bird cracking their egg, the new swimmers burst forth, doing whatever it takes to keep afloat and move forward.

And that is good enough for a while.

But then, they learn the accepted strokes, and everyone in the pool is in on the choreography. It’s like the climax in one of those dance movies–or musicals–that makes me so happy. Or a line dancing party. Everybody agrees on the moves, and the challenge is going in the same direction as the rest of the room.

And visions of a rhythm nation, where we all get along because of the universal language of dance swirl through my head…

ahem

We were talking about swimming, right?
