Just when I thought I was done with buoyancy, it came up again yesterday, surprisingly.
I made it to the pool in the early hour, and found myself alone in the deep end pretty early into my set. One of the two people who had been swimming in the deep end when I got there had left a pool buoy and a kickboard beside the pool when she left.
Having read…

It’s been a month since I’ve been to the pool. I don’t remember why I missed it the last time. Probably something to do with tennis. I mean, I had a planned tennis date that night, and decided to do just one workout that day. Or maybe something else schedule related.
But this week, I missed swimming because of the clock. I woke up at 7:20, which should have been 6:20. . .
If open swim is over at 7:45, there’s really no point in trying to get there if you wake up at 7:20, right?…

When I woke up too early today, I thought that my strategy for swimming was failing me. The whole beating the crowd deal neither avoided the crowd, nor gave me enough time to swim my whole set.
So I considered getting to the pool at its opening. Then I sat around until my usual time to leave. I’m nothing if not a creature of habit.
Then I noticed the snow. It had snowed around 6 inches the night before, and I wondered if I would be able to leave my block.
But it was…

My daughter’s science teacher’s wife looked familiar. I knew I had seen her before; thought I’d met her before, but I couldn’t quite place her.
When I saw her at a friend’s surprise birthday party, I thought that was the connection. But this morning, I saw her at the pool.
I think that’s where I’d seen her before.
Last weekend, I went to a zumba party, and I saw someone else I’d met at the pool, years ago. Although my kids’ former swim coaches have all moved away, the…

Usually, I have a yardage goal in mind when I go swimming. That mile marker looms large in my mind, even as I remain stuck around 1000 yards for months at a time.
I have been away from the pool awhile, so I was really looking forward to swimming today and hitting at least 1000 yards.
But, life got in the way, and my son needed me this morning. I had to consider if I had enough time to go swimming this morning at all.
And then I thought about the times I’ve had restricted…

Anyway, all the lanes had two people in them, so I did something I haven’t done before. I joined the people swimming in the diving well, horizontally across the pool.…

Before I flesh out some of my half formed thoughts about swimming an choreography, I wanted to mention two other more obscure aquatic sports that came to mind since the last post.
Synchronized swimming and water polo. (I won’t even go there with crew and other sports involving boats–at least not now).
Now, about dance…
I have noticed in this week of watching swim lessons a few similarities between swimming and dancing. There is something so exhilarating about watching a…

Over the last month, I had more encounters with splashing in the water watching children than with actual swimming.
My old lady swim cap keeps my hair dry while children splash. It doesn’t hold up as well when I’m actually swimming.
I thought a lot about how I looked, like a stereotype. Can’t get my hair wet, can’t swim, blah, blah. It was embarrassing.
But, yesterday, when I took my four youngest children to the beach for a birthday party, and spent my time in the lake…

Last week, I ran the Girls on the Run 5k with my 10 year old. This was my second time running in this event; I did it 3 years ago with my then 8 y/o. I had considered retraining the older girl and having her join us this time, but the thought of trying to keep up with two girls of wildly different pace discouraged me from that task.
I felt much better about my preparedness this time around. I am 20ish pounds lighter, and not pregnant, for one. For two, I can actually run the entire…

Swimmers are so nice. I am struck by how friendly everyone is in the locker room after I get out of the pool.
I remembered how nice everyone was at the Y when I started swimming regularly. They met for breakfast on Saturdays. I didn’t even consider myself a real swimmer yet, and I was invited.
The ladies in the locker room struck up a pleasant conversation this week when I went swimming. I had thought I don’t go often enough for anyone to notice, but no, that wasn’t…

I remember driving across town and seeing the bike trails at the side of the road. I imagined the mystery awaiting me at the end of those trails…I couldn’t wait to take my bike out and explore them.
But when I took my bike on the trail? I was just riding my bike. On the street.
After a certain point, all this triathlon stuff is starting to look like a workout. An INTENSE workout, but a workout, nevertheless.
I guess it had to happen sometime, that as I actually worked on…

The hiatus has been too long. And my body knew it.
No matter I’ve been working out 6 days a week. No matter that I completed the 100 pushup challenge, the 200 squat challenge, and have finished 4 weeks of couch to 5k training.
When I hit the water, my body let me know it’s been a long time since I’d seriously swum. I managed 500 yards in 20 or so minutes. I think I swim too fast for me to be able to sustain my pace in freestyle. I did most of my laps on my back. I decided not…

I once told my husband if we got a pool, I’d never get dressed in the summer. He told me I had a pool in my future.
I should have said I need to have a lake house.
One of my daughters just had a slumber party at her friend’s house, which just happens to be surrounded by lake. The house is completely lit up with light reflecting off the lake. The children jump on a big trampoline with the lake as a constant backdrop.
There’s a swing that’s hung just so you can swing over…

I used to burden myself with the notion that I must teach my children all things. I am, after all, homeschooling mother. The bigger the challenge, bring it on!
That was back when I was schooling two children and having babies and what not.
I found out that I can’t legally teach everything, (hello, driver’s ed!), and I physically can’t teacher other things, not the least of which is swimming!
I can’t do much more than get the kids to the pool and…
