Hey R.L.,

Once you complete your refresher you might want to hook up with the Aquatic Voyagers Scuba Club? That's one of the NABS clubs up there in the New York Area. They do a lot of diving and I'm sure they'd love to have you as one of their members or just to dive with. If you're interested in contacting them or to find the nearest NABS club near you go to the NABS website @

and click on clubs and it'll give you a listing of NABS clubs in your area. By the way thanks for the add.

What team are you affiliated with?

I am taking lessons at the Y on 135. Although I live near a YMCA in Brooklyn, I'd heard so much about the Harlem YMCA. I love the community feel to the place.

Before moving to NYC, I lived in Minneapolis, and before that in Los Angeles, Novato, CA; Newport, RI and Albany, GA. My father was in the Navy.

I met with my instructor today. I love being back in the water. He says that the Harlem Y will begin offering scuba lessons this year. I'm so excited.

r.l., Thanks for your response! It's always good and safe to take a refresher
course in anything that you've been away from for awhile. As the saying goes,
"it is always better to be Safe than Sorry!" I used to swim at the Harlem YMCA
on 135th Street. I remember it to be a nice Indoor Pool. There's another nice pool at the Kennedy Center and "Bath House" in Harlem. Where did you reside prior to moving to New York City? Enjoy the "Big Apple" and keep us
abreast of your aquatic progress. - Ric P.

r.l. woods,
If you haven't already done so, check out the Aquatic Voyagers SCUBA
Club in the metropolitan New York City area. The president of AVSC is
Norman Berhannan, also a member of Diversity in Aquatics can be reached
here on the DAP Network. Norman is also the Northeastern Representative for the National Association of Black SCUBA Divers, Inc.
