No Funding? Can Crowdfunding Help End Drowning?

Have a great program but no way to fund it?  Crowdfunding could be the answer.  Social media is changing how we do business in more ways than one.  The old way of doing business meant funding programs by applying for grants, hosting charity runs or selling candy to raise money.  Traditional ways of tapping into established…See More

Child Safety Products - Which Should You Use?

Are you a ‘buy every child safety product on the market’ parent or a ‘well, a few bumps won’t kill them’ parent?  Is every table in your house surrounded with foam padding or do you silently curse when you are visiting someone with an indecipherable toilet lock? We all want to keep kids safe, but the huge range of options can…See More

I'm A Mom and I'm Pissed Off!

I’m a mom and I’m pissed off.  Not a bit concerned.  Not even angry.  I’m pissed off as in, ‘I have a flame thrower and I’m not afraid to use it’ pissed off.  Why?  Because child safety is about as big a mom issue as you can get, and yet children keep drowning and no one is talking about it.  We all know ‘stop, drop and roll’,…See More

Using social media to teach swimming.

How can I teach thee?  Let me count the ways....Traditional swimming lessons  - through your Y, park district pool, community pool, local swim instructor or any other well-regarded program.  The classes should be fun and not at all threatening or frightening to your child.  Start early and count on being in swim classes for a…See More

Make Stone Soup.

Are we ‘Too many cooks spoil the soup’ or ‘Stone soup’?   (Stone soup is the fable where the hungry soldier puts a stone in a pot of water and convinces the townspeople to add to the ‘delicious’ stone soup by adding a turnip, a potato, a carrot, until it really does become a delicious soup for the whole town.)Too many cooks…See More

Shallow Water Blackout

Wet cell phones don't work.

That’s right, cell phones don’t work when they are wet.  I’ve heard the trick about putting them in a bag of rice to dry them out, so if you leave your phone outside during a rain storm or it tips out of your pocket into a puddle, you can bring it back to life in a day.  That’s great, but what if you need to call for help?  What…See More

Thank you for the kind words, Rebecca.  You are also an amazing person, and I am not lost on your accomplishments and passion for sharing aquatics information.  Where does your brother live?  If he is somewhere on earth, we can get connected at some point in time.  Take care, keep the flame burning bright.  And I am so sorry about your recent personal loss of a loved one.

Thank you Rebbeca,

It's all about making a difference in their lives. The families with Autistic children need something that they can feel their is a spark inside of them, they may achieve at doing something. Water gives them that outlet in life. I hope to spread the word and educate more people that they can do it. Keep in touch, always wanting to communicate with others that make a difference such as yourself.

Rebecca,   A bit about us. On the personal side... I am a single father of four girls, I work for the Dept. of Defense as an instructor (we all do actually). Our main focus is combat water survival for the Navy, we also work with the Navy SEAL SPECWAR candidates. Jody is my Vice President who presently is an active duty 23 yr. Navy SEAL, who has been awarded the Silver star w/ Valor in combat as well as two Bonze stars. He is a father who tragically lost his 15 yr. old special needs daughter last year. Jody's main focus is our mentorship program, he recently finished a program in Cincianatti for Proctor n Gamble in this capacity. Chis Thompson won the Bronze Medal in the Sydney Olympics for swimming, he presently works as a contractor for the government. Don Sanderlin has a masters Degree in Education, was an Olympic trial swimmer and also is an insructor for the Navy. Both work in our program developement and management. We have a passion for what we do and want to leave the Govt. and focus on our Organization 100%. So right now that is what I am focusing on. I'd love to discuss what we do more in depth, and look forward to hearing from you. Right now I am going to cut down a chistmas tree with my girls... :o)      It's truely my pleasure to have met you.   R/    Matthew

Thanks Rebecca. We have information on our website www.seastarsaquatics.org and I have a facebook account SEASTARS Aquatics. The short of it is I run a non-profit that provides a free year round USA swim team for children on free or reduced lunch. We also run 10 half hour sessions for special needs children and adults free of charge. We cover all costs for the swimmers, Meet free, uniforms, etc. We provide private and semi private swim lessons to the community to help off set some of the costs of the swim team and help spread awareness of the program. All swimmers are put on an incentive program which correlates to a token economy and the earn and spend points for new equipment and suits. The 5 ways kids earn points through the Incentive program are academics, personal goals, community service hours, attendance, and positive sportsmanship conduct. Let me know if you have any questions I can answer.
