Working that Bouyancy

Just when I thought I was done with buoyancy, it came up again yesterday, surprisingly.I made it to the pool in the early hour, and found myself alone in the deep end pretty early into my set. One of the two people who had been swimming in the deep end when I got there had left a pool buoy and a kickboard beside the pool when she left. Having read…See More

Daylight Savings Foils me Again

It’s been a month since I’ve been to the pool. I don’t remember why I missed it the last time. Probably something to do with tennis. I mean, I had a planned tennis date that night, and decided to do just one workout that day. Or maybe something else schedule related. But this week, I missed swimming because of the clock. I woke up at 7:20, which should have been 6:20. . .If open swim is over at 7:45, there’s really no point in trying to get there if you wake up at 7:20, right? Here’s hoping I…See More

Just When I Thought it Wasn't Safe to get Into the Water

When I woke up too early today, I thought that my strategy for swimming was failing me. The whole beating the crowd deal neither avoided the crowd, nor gave me enough time to swim my whole set.So I considered getting to the pool at its opening. Then I sat around until my usual time to leave. I’m nothing if not a creature of habit. Then I noticed the snow. It had snowed around 6 inches the night before, and I wondered if I would be able to leave my block. But it was bearable, and I found myself at…See More

People You Meet at the Pool

My daughter’s science teacher’s wife looked familiar. I knew I had seen her before; thought I’d met her before, but I couldn’t quite place her. When I saw her at a friend’s surprise birthday party, I thought that was the connection. But this morning, I saw her at the pool.I think that’s where I’d seen her before.Last weekend, I went to a zumba party, and I saw someone else I’d met at the pool, years ago. Although my kids’ former swim coaches have all moved away, the synchronized swim coach is…See More

Get In Get Out

Usually, I have a yardage goal in mind when I go swimming. That mile marker looms large in my mind, even as I remain stuck around 1000 yards for months at a time.I have been away from the pool awhile, so I was really looking forward to swimming today and hitting at least 1000 yards. But, life got in the way, and my son needed me this morning. I had to consider if I had enough time to go swimming this morning at all.And then I thought about the times I’ve had restricted time, but went ahead and…See More

swimming sideways

When I went swimming last week, the pool was full. I think I saw some high school kids as well as college kids and the usual older crowd. Summer is over, so I should expect more of the same next week. Also? I got there a good 15-30 minutes earlier than usual. Note to self: don’t do that.Anyway, all the lanes had two people in them, so I did something I haven’t done before. I joined the people swimming in the diving well, horizontally across the pool. This seemed a much shorter distance to me,…See More

On Swimming, Dancing, and More Obscure Aquatic Sports

Before I flesh out some of my half formed thoughts about swimming an choreography, I wanted to mention two other more obscure aquatic sports that came to mind since the last post.Synchronized swimming and water polo. (I won’t even go there with crew and other sports involving boats–at least not now). Now, about dance…I have noticed in this week of watching swim lessons a few similarities between swimming and dancing. There is something so exhilarating about watching a new swimmer. Like a baby…See More

On Non-Swimming vs Not Swimming

Over the last month, I had more encounters with splashing in the water watching children than with actual swimming. My old lady swim cap keeps my hair dry while children splash. It doesn’t hold up as well when I’m actually swimming.I thought a lot about how I looked, like a stereotype. Can’t get my hair wet, can’t swim, blah, blah. It was embarrassing. But, yesterday, when I took my four youngest children to the beach for a birthday party, and spent my time in the lake with the two non-swimmers,…See More

Hi Angela,
Boy, did I miss alot or what? Very interesting and profound discussion you have engaged others in, and I do miss it. Racism has been a part of our whole existence, even from the beginning. So when it comes to the pool, there is nothing different that we are going to experience, that we haven't experienced already. Sadly enough, you would think this mind set would change, as the generations changes, but unfortunately, in a lot of cases, this is not so. Very interesting question you asked regarding Black Swim Teachers being good for Black Children, but what about all others. I am sure there are Blakc cCoachcer and Teachers, paarticularly in the State of Florida that ccould better answer your inquiry than most.

Hi Angela,
You did a wonderful job in presenting some facts about African Americans in swimming. However, I am a bit confused. The article stated 20 first, and I didn't count but only a handful, of which I read all. Am I missing something??/ By the way, great info.

Thanks Angela. Yes that is the way I swim and I enjoy it very much. Terry Laughlin calls it mindful swimming where your not thinking about a mile or the whole swim, but rather the next stroke. It really has made me a better marathon swimmer as a result.

Angela, thanks for posting the video of Total Immersion. The man in the video is a good friend of mine Shinji Taghuchi who lives in San Jose and has been instrumental in teaching the TI method. Your right in what you say it is a smooth, perpetual stroke that emphasizes hip drive rather than legs and arms. Anyway, I'm excited that others will get the chance to see TI freestyle stroke in action. Thanks again!

Hi Angela,
Welcome to the site and hope you find it as interesting and informative as we have. Way to go Mom, by involving your chidren actively in sound swim programs. It is my desire that more DAP Members take the time and read through some of your blog, which I found very informative and interesting. I can see that your passion for swimming is what's needed by more of us as African American Parents, who did not have opportunities afforeded to us, in order that we not only decrease the statistics in drowning by African American Children, but to excel as well in the sport of swimming, like we do more naturally in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Your Blog is "The Bomb", as I perused the articles, before going back to read more details. My favorite one was about MJ Amin, who swan the 100 yard Fly in 50.06 seconds. Damn, that Brother was Olympic quality. I personally worked with some of Morehouse Phenominal Swimmers from Chicago during the summers of 1976-79. These brothers use to swim across the entire Jackson Park Beach just practicing and preparing thenselves for the upcoming season. Angela, Keep up the good work, because I will personally read your Blogs on a continuos basis. I enjoyed the blog about your 6 year old, "I Can;t Beleive". Take Care and May God Continue To Find Favor In All That You Put Your Talents and Gifts To Sharing With The Rest Of Us who are just as concerned. Keep swimming My Sister. You will surely succeed in the Masters Program. Darrick
