Two swimmers from Obama Academy of International Studies from the Pittsburgh Public Schools, District 8, competed in the PIAA AAA Boys Swim Championships in Bucknell University in March 2012. Both set personal records and new school records. This was the first year the swimmers competed under the "Obama Academy" name, as it had been Schenley. And, this was the first time in more than two decades that TWO swimmers from the school attended the Pennsylvania State Championships. Next year the Obama swimmers join District 7, the WPIAL, and also are placed in the Double A Class with other smaller schools.

Both swimmers were also on the team's 200 medley relay, winning a gold medal. Tait did freestyle and Erik fly. The time was fast enough to win at the meet but not fast enough to qualify for the PIAA meet. So both swimmers won two gold medals at the city championships.
