Hello all! I am happy to be a new member of this group and look forward to networking with you all. Any Houston,Texas triathletes? I have only done one sprint tri in my life but my 8 year old daughter will be doing her 5th Kids Triathlon this Saturday. She's hooked! I would love to see more diversity in this sport for kids.
In July, our Triathlon Council hosted a Twitter Chat with our Triathlon Council Chair Norman Seavers & our Aquatics Council Chair Thaddeus Gamory . If you have any further questions be sure to use the #diachats or email us at info@diversityinaquatics.org.
Woops. My message to all about our summer camp biathlon should have gone onto the wall. Sorry.
100 swim + 320 run + 25 swim. Time trial start on :30-second intervals. Barefoot run in grass field. Yellow caps with numbers for each participant.
Hard work and good experience.
Here's a great article on Megan Hutchinson aka Hutch from the Centre Daily Times.
Jayson that is a great idea, but it takes a lot to pull it off. I started a tri club a few years back and that was our club goal to host a triathlon. We decided to do a youth triathlon and it was a huge success (pool swim better control of bodies and safety). It took about 15 months to plan and then run our first race. We decided to continue in the two years following our first race. Each year our numbers increased and the word of mouth was impressive as people were asking and calling about it when we decided not to host the fourth tri.
Hosting a triathlon is doable and something that will take a lot of planning and checking out especially if you want it sanctioned (which I highly recommend). Either type, Adult or Youth, it would be good to get folks involved in a new opportunity for cross training and exposure. One of the entry points for folks in our community (Ames, IA) was in providing a youth triathlon it gave us a chance to work with the kids in three different disciplines and expose them to a new sport. It also was a way to increase children's activity levels in the summer and an entry point for parents to ask about our Tri Club. Prior to the clinic it was a way for us to host swim clinics, bike clinics, run clinics and the overall preparation for the triathlon. Several of the kids in our community have continued and became hooked on the sport and particpate in elite level youth triathlons.
I would be interested in serving on a planning committee toward planning a triathlon. Contact me at runtrimn@gmail.com
This is a great sport . . . if ever your triathletes need an open water training facility, please consider Lake Rawlings in Rawlings (Brunswick County), VA. Our driveway is a mile long, plus the country roads are accessible for running and cycling. You can visit our website at www.LakeRawlings.com, or call 804-478-9000. Hope this helps.

Another interest area for me.
I purchased a bike a few years ago and received a wetsuit with the bike. I am like Ms. McCray, I don't like to wear it because it definitely heats you up. Additionally, you ride a bit higher in the water. I formed a triathlon club a few years ago and one of the pre-race activities our club would sponsor is an open water swim clinic. This was a chance for people to come out and tryout their wetsuits and practice starts for the triathlon. The feedback recieved was great as people felt more comfortable practicing and using their equipment a few times before the actually competed in a race with it.
Check stores like play it again sports for wetsuits or check other media outlets (triathlon blogs). The key in wetsuits is making sure it fits correctly. A friend wore a wetsuit that did not fit him and had some pretty bad chaffing and rashes in spots on his body, which made his ride and run very painful. :)
Is there anyone in the Ohio area that is interested in training for local race?
I have competed in several triathlons (Sprint, International) and want to jump back into the competition flow. My goal is to begin competing again to prepare for 1/2 Ironman and Ironman in a year or two. The beauty of Tri's is that the training is great and keeps me motivated. Something different to do everyday, I just love the training.
