help for btwhs swim team in norfolk va

my son was on the swim team this year,i went to the meets,my heart was always so heavy to see them compete,they were horrible,swimming terribly,i think if a summer "teach how to swim" type program was available to them,when swim season rolled around btwhs could have a competitive team.i wish someone could help them,i can't i'm not the best swimmer but i know there is someone out there that could fill the boots!

Hi toni:
Have you talked to Shaun Anderson about your concerns about the swim team? Do they swim at NSU? I agree they should be swimming year round to become better swimmers and better competitors. How often does the swim team meet?

Hey Toni,
I use to do alot with BTW, but now I am limited due to my coaching position with Old Dominion University (NCAA rules), however our USA team- Tidewater Aquatics Club often runs numerous high school clinics. Ricky Johnson who is also featured on this website usually heads up those efforts. Please contact him via the website, and we will get everything on the right track!

I sent emails and letters out to every high school in Norfolk asking them if they wanted to come to my HS swim clinic in September and October. Lake Taylor answered by sending swimmers and offering me a job as the girls' coach. Norfolk needs more swim instruction year round to build up the sport and keep kids swimming. Swim lessons get kids to float and not drown but competition keeps them swimming, makes them want to improve their strokes, and makes the competitive swimmer and the people around them safer when they are near the water (which is everywhere in our area). I want to run more HS clinics. Look for me at the District Championship Meet and maybe I can get more coaches, swimmers and parents on board the next time I run one.

I pray you utilize the resources that have come to your attention in order that your concerns be addressed. I do hope and pray that others like Ricky Johnson do reach out to lend their expertise in helping Booker T. Washington High and others with similar concerns. Keep The Faith.
